The global shutter 1280×800 resolution OV9281 camera module is primarily designed for Raspberry Pi boards and can connect directly to the RPi’s CSI-2 camera interface without additional hardware. An adapter board allows connection of up to four cameras on a single Raspberry Pi board and supports the High-Quality Camera.
The sensor’s global shutter and excellent low-light sensitivity make it ideal for applications requiring gesture detection, head and eye tracking, and depth and motion detection. This capability enables device manufacturers to implement a monochrome or NIR camera device, reducing memory usage by utilizing the Y8 stream format. A monochrome camera can also function as the physical camera in a logical multi-camera setup, improving low-light noise performance.
The Raspberry Pi Camera Module 2, which replaced the original Camera Module in April 2016, features a Sony IMX219 8-megapixel sensor, compared to the 5-megapixel OmniVision OV5647 sensor of the original module.
