The ADK USB Host Shield, compatible with Arduino, is built upon the MAX3421E, a USB peripheral/host controller encompassing the essential digital logic and analog circuitry required for the implementation of a full-speed USB peripheral or a full-/low-speed host compliant with USB specification rev 2.0.
Notably, this shield expands its compatibility beyond just UNO and Duemilanove, extending support to Mega and Mega 2560 without the need for SPI re-wiring or code modifications. By soldering the included stackable connectors (ensuring the 2×3 ICSP connector’s female side faces down), the shield becomes a plug-and-play solution. Leveraging the USB HOST function of Arduino compatibility, it facilitates communication between your Arduino and other USB devices and additionally supports USB HUB functionality.
USB Host Shield adds valuable USB Host capabilities to the Arduino board. Although there are numerous USB Host shields available, selecting the right one is crucial. Understanding the USB protocol reveals two device types: host (or server) and peripheral (client). The host device manages the peripheral device and supplies power to it. In typical scenarios, when connecting a USB device like a mouse or keyboard to a computer, the computer acts as the host, controlling and polling the client device (keyboard or mouse, or even an Arduino).
To establish effective communication using the USB protocol, at least one device must act as the host. This distinction is vital; for instance, connecting two keyboards together without a host will not result in communication between them.
