CD74HC4067 High Speed CMOS 16-Channel Analog/Digital Multiplexer Breakout Module

The CD74HC4067 High-Speed CMOS 16-Channel Analog/Digital Multiplexer Breakout Module is a convenient breakout board for the versatile 16-Channel Analog/Digital Multiplexer/Demultiplexer. Functioning like a rotary switch, this chip internally routes the common pin (labeled COM in the schematic, SIG on the board) to one of the 16 channel pins (CHANxx). It supports both digital and analog signals, with voltage limited to VCC, and allows bidirectional connections.

To control the CD74HC4067, simply connect 4 digital outputs to the address select pins (S0-S3) and send the binary address of the desired channel. This enables you to interface up to 16 sensors using only 5 pins, providing efficient multiplexing capabilities.

Additionally, because the mux/demux works with digital signals, it can be utilized to transmit TTL-level serial data to or from multiple devices. For instance, you can connect the TX pins of 16 devices to a single RX pin on your microcontroller and select any one of those 16 devices to communicate with. For two-way communication, adding a second board allows routing the microcontroller’s TX line to 16 device’s RX lines. Multiple boards can be employed to create similar setups for I2C, SPI, etc.

The CD74HC4067 features bidirectional internal switches, supporting voltages between ground and VCC, with low “on” resistance and “off” leakage, while employing “break-before-make” switching to prevent crosstalk. Additionally, the board exposes the chip’s “enable” pin, allowing complete disconnection of the common pin when driven high (all switches “off”).
