The ENC28J60 Ethernet Module (10 Pin Package: SSOP) is a compact board equipped with an Ethernet port that facilitates the conversion of Ethernet signals into SPI. Featuring Microchip’s ENC28J60 integrated circuit, this module enables microcontroller systems like Arduino boards to access internet connectivity via Ethernet.
Its small form factor and SPI support make it suitable for a wide range of projects. It harnesses the capabilities of the new SSOP 10 package Microchip ENC28J60 Stand-Alone Ethernet Controller IC, which boasts features catering to various network protocol requirements. The module seamlessly connects to most microcontrollers via a standard SPI interface, offering transfer speeds of up to 25MHz.
Serving as an industry-standard Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), the ENC28J60 Ethernet Module (10 Pin Package: SSOP) is designed to function as an Ethernet network interface for controllers equipped with SPI.
This module provides all the necessary components to transform an Arduino into an Ethernet-enabled device for network communication. Despite the prevalence of WiFi, Ethernet remains a viable option for numerous applications, offering fast and secure network connectivity.
The ENC28J60 comprises seven key functional blocks:
1. SPI interface facilitating communication between the host controller and the ENC28J60.
2. Control registers for managing and monitoring the ENC28J60.
3. Dual port RAM buffer for handling received and transmitted data packets.
4. Arbiter responsible for regulating access to the RAM buffer when requests are initiated from DMA, transmit, and receive blocks.
5. Bus interface interpreting data and commands received via the SPI interface.
6. MAC (Medium Access Control) module implementing IEEE 802.3 compliant MAC logic.
7. PHY (Physical Layer) module encoding and decoding analog data present on the twisted-pair interface.
