The M5 Propeller Nut Caps for Emax 2204 Brushless DC Motor comprise two different caps for CW (clockwise) and CCW (counterclockwise) rotation, designed to be fitted above the propeller on 2204 brushless motors. The caps are often distinguishable by colors like black and silver for user-friendly identification.
In the world of mini quad motors, where some are labeled CW and CCW, confusion can arise. Essentially, CW and CCW motors are the same, differing only in the direction of their prop shaft threads. For a CCW motor, the prop nut secures by turning clockwise, and for CW motors, the prop nuts need to be rotated anti-clockwise to fasten.
The rationale behind having different threads for CW and CCW motors is known as ‘Self-locking.’ In a quadcopter setup with two motors spinning clockwise and two spinning counterclockwise, using threads opposite to the motor spin direction ensures that the prop nuts automatically lock themselves down, preventing them from coming loose during flight.
While this self-locking mechanism adds security during operation, it can make sourcing spare prop nuts for both threads challenging. Additionally, it may cause confusion when determining which way to turn to remove the prop nuts during propeller changes.
Practically, if you can fasten the prop nut clockwise, you have a CCW motor, and you should use the Right-handed thread nut (standard thread). For CW motors, opt for the Left-hand thread nuts (reverse thread).
Although this system introduces some complexity, it provides the advantage of self-locking prop nuts, ensuring a secure and reliable connection during quadcopter operation.
