Today, Raspberry Pi introduces a new official expansion board: the Raspberry Pi Build HAT. This versatile accessory fits any Raspberry Pi with a 40-pin GPIO header and allows you to control up to four LEGO motors and sensors from the LEGO Portfolio, providing a flexible system with limitless possibilities. With the Build HAT, you can create robust, intelligent machines that leverage the computing power of Raspberry Pi alongside LEGO components. The angular motors come in various sizes and feature integrated encoders for position querying.

The Build HAT connects to LEGO devices using an LPF2 connector. It incorporates an onboard RP2040 microcontroller to handle low-level control of the Technic devices. An external power supply is required to provide sufficient power. For higher-level control, developers can use Python to query sensors and operate motors.

A dedicated Python library accompanies the Build HAT, enabling users to write software that controls the connected robot parts. While programming LEGO components with Python is not a unique feature of Raspberry Pi, as LEGO kits include a hub that supports connecting six devices and can store and run Python programs, the Build HAT enhances the integration and expands the possibilities for Raspberry Pi users.
