The Raspberry Pi Zero W introduces a significant enhancement – any guesses? (Hint: W). It’s not merely a letter; it’s the addition of WiFi!
Yes, you heard it right. The Raspberry Pi Zero board now comes with built-in WiFi, thanks to the inclusion of the BCM43143 WiFi chip. If this sounds familiar, it’s because a similar chip was integrated into the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. Similar to its counterpart, the Pi Zero W also boasts Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
This upgrade eliminates the need for bothersome communication peripherals such as an ethernet cable or dongle. Moreover, it maintains almost identical form factors, connections, and mounting holes as the Pi Zero v1.3, allowing you to use nearly all the same accessories – just without the need for additional WiFi components.
Featuring a micro SD card slot, mini HDMI port, two micro USB ports (one for power, one for USB), 512MB of RAM, and a single-core 1 GHz processor chip, the Pi Zero W packs all these features into the slimmest form factor within the Raspberry Pi catalog.
While retaining all the functionality of the original Pi Zero, the Pi Zero W adds enhanced connectivity, including 802.11 b/g/n wireless LAN, Bluetooth 4.1, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). With these additions, it encompasses all the features present in the Pi Zero and more.
