A Battery Management System (BMS) is a crucial component in Li-ion battery packs, tasked with monitoring and ensuring the protection of the batteries during operation. Due to the specific conditions under which lithium-ion batteries can be used safely, a BMS becomes essential for monitoring the battery state and ensuring operational safety.
The BMS is an electronic module responsible for controlling rechargeable batteries, either at the cell or battery pack level. Its functions include protecting the battery from operating outside its safe parameters, monitoring its state, calculating secondary data, reporting that data, controlling its environment, and authenticating it.
The SmartElex 3s BMS device is a highly integrated Li-ion switched-mode battery charge controller. This device features a constant-frequency synchronous switching PWM controller with high-accuracy charge current and voltage regulation. It also includes charge preconditioning, termination, adapter current regulation, and charge status monitoring.
Operating on a 19V DC 5A (minimum) wall adapter, which connects through a DC Jack or 2-pin connectors onboard, the SmartElex 3s Li-ion board supports up to 7A. Notably, the SmartElex 3s Li-ion BMS incorporates various protections such as Overvoltage, Undervoltage, and Overcurrent during discharge (OCD). Additionally, the device includes status LEDs that indicate battery status, allowing users to identify issues like overvoltage or undervoltage in the cells.
