If you use the official V1 camera (ov5647), V2 camera (IMX219), or the HQ camera (IMX477), you can simply plug and play. For third-party cameras, refer to the supported camera sizes below and use the libcamera stack. Modify the config.txt file and add the appropriate configuration line based on the camera type.
Raspberry Pi currently offers two types of camera boards: an 8MP device and a 12MP High Quality (HQ) camera. The 8MP device is also available in a NoIR version without an IR filter. The original 5MP device is no longer available from Raspberry Pi.
Raspberry Pi is transitioning from a legacy camera software stack based on proprietary Broadcom GPU code to an open-source stack based on libcamera. Raspberry Pi OS images from Bullseye onwards will include only the libcamera-based stack. If you are using the latest Bullseye Raspberry Pi OS, libcamera is pre-installed. For those who wish to use the legacy camera stack (Raspicam), please refer to the Raspicam guide.
