An LED matrix, also known as an LED display, is a sizeable, low-resolution type of dot-matrix display widely utilized in industrial and commercial contexts for information displays. It also finds applications in hobbyist projects for creating human–machine interfaces. The LED matrix is composed of a two-dimensional diode matrix, where the cathodes of the LEDs are interconnected in rows, and their anodes are interconnected in columns (or vice versa).
In the arrangement of an LED dot matrix display, individual LEDs are positioned at the intersections of the columns and rows within the matrix. LEDs within the same row are electrically connected, as are LEDs within the same column. This organizational structure enables the matrix to illuminate specific LEDs, forming patterns or messages by selectively activating the appropriate rows and columns. The flexibility of LED matrices makes them versatile tools for conveying information or creating visually dynamic displays in various contexts.
