The Waveshare RS485 CAN HAT for Raspberry Pi empowers your Pi to establish stable communication with other devices over long distances through RS485/CAN functions.

RS485 stands out as one of the most resilient wired serial communication protocols, capable of supporting distances of up to 1200 meters (4000 ft). On the other hand, CAN (Controller Area Network) finds application in automotive settings, providing high immunity to noise commonly encountered in vehicles.

Indeed, this board supports both RS485 and CAN protocols, enabling bidirectional communication. Simultaneous use of both standards/protocols is possible since each utilizes different peripherals for communication. Specifically, the CAN controller utilizes the SPI interface, while RS485 communication is facilitated through the UART of the Raspberry Pi.

Key Features:

1.  Standard Raspberry Pi 40PIN GPIO extension header ensures compatibility with Raspberry Pi series boards.
2. CAN function is facilitated by the onboard CAN controller MCP2515 via the SPI interface, along with the onboard transceiver SN65HVD230.
3. RS485 function is controlled via UART, enabling half-duplex communication. It supports automatic TX/RX control without the need for programming, with the onboard transceiver SP3485.
4. Onboard TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) effectively suppresses surge voltage and transient spike voltage in the circuit for RS485 transceiving, providing lightning-proof and anti-electrostatic protection.
5. Reserved control pins allow for compatibility with other control boards.
6. Development resources and a manual are provided, including examples in wiringPi/python for easy integration and usage.
