XH-A954 Potentiometer Module

A potentiometer, often referred to as a pot, consists of a three-terminal resistor featuring a sliding or rotating contact, enabling it to function as an adjustable voltage divider. When utilizing only two terminals—the end and the wiper—it serves as a variable resistor or rheostat. The instrument known as a potentiometer operates on the principle of a voltage divider, utilized for measuring electric potential, with the component itself embodying this principle, hence its name.

Potentiometers find widespread use in controlling electrical devices like volume controls in audio equipment. Mechanically operated potentiometers can serve as position transducers, such as those found in joysticks. However, potentiometers are seldom employed to directly regulate significant power (exceeding a watt), as the power dissipation within the potentiometer would be comparable to that of the controlled load.
